This year, the NIH P30 Core Center for Musculoskeletal Biology and Medicine (CCMBM) hosted attendees in person and online for their annual retreat. Co-sponsored with the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Musculoskeletal Science Without Borders drew 145 attendees to join the 39 invited speakers and moderators during March 18-19, 2025.

The first day of the retreat opened with a keynote presentation from Odette Schwegler and Christiaan Scott, MBCHB, FCPAED (SA) of Tin Soldiers Global, a non-profit focused on early diagnosis of pediatric musculoskeletal conditions. This was followed by a lively panel discussion featuring members of Tin Soldiers and UCSF faculty members moderated by Ed Hsiao, MD, PhD.
The second day began with introductory remarks from Tamara Alliston, PhD, and Robert Nissenson, PhD, followed by keynote presentation from Saam Morshed, MD, PhD, MPH, and David Shearer, MD, MPH of the Institute for Global Orthopaedic Traumatology. The rest of the morning consisted of sessions on basic and clinical science featuring Bradford Distinguished Lectureship Speaker Ed Hsiao, MD, PhD, who gave a talk titled “Skeletons in the Closet: Decoding the Enigma of Heterotopic Ossification.”
The afternoon session featured multiple presentations from UCSF faculty including Margot Kushel, MD (UCSF Action Research Center for Health Equity), Jonathan Butler, PhD (UCSF Black Health Initiative), and Paul Volberding, MD (Professor Emeritus, Epidemiology & Biostatistics).
Throughout both days, attendees also heard short slam and lightning talks from UCSF trainees, CCMBM grantees, and CCMBM STRETCH scholars. With a total of 5 slam talks and 5 lightning talks, this year’s retreat featured a variety of exciting research from emerging scholars.
